Just watched The Tingler which was a lot of fun and much more artistic than I expected. It would have been great to see it in the theater! Electrical buzzers were put under people's seats in the auditorium and activated whenever the Tingler appeared on-screen. William Castle dubbed this as Percepto! Fake screamers and fainters were also planted in the audience.
Becca & I are so happy to unveil the second issue of Clementine Magazine today! There are excellent new poems by Kimiko Hahn, Marcus Jackson, Janine Joseph, Lauren Gould, and Erin M. Bertram. David Levine's 1970s photographs are also included.
When I was back home in Lynchburg, I stopped by River Ridge Mall. It was sad to see all the closed stores and Macy's with no customers. The mall was never dead like that on a Friday night in the 90s.
FYE (previously Record Town) was out of Michael Jackson CD's. If you wanted to reserve one, there was a $5 deposit. I remember buying the cassette single to "Scream" for 99 cents there the day it came out. I was embarrassed to buy it then. The man who rang it up for me still works there. There are no longer cassettes in FYE nor a spot for singles. In the wake of Michael's death, it's ever more apparent that the era he came from--where pop music consumption could be an event-- is over.
My friend Chantelle writes about her reaction to the death of Michael Jackson on her blog. While jdbrecords will be on break for a bit, feel free to share your thoughts on Jackson here.
Mariah released the album cover image for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel today. Thoughts? She tweets: The reason I chose to use 3 images for the cover is cos there are a lot of different emotions and stories revealed on this album.
The Puss caterpillar is both amazing and terrifying.
The 'fur' of the larva contains venomous spines that cause extremely painful reactions in human skin upon contact. The reactions are sometimes localized to the affected area but are often very severe, radiating up a limb and causing burning, swelling, nausea, headache, abdominal distress, rashes, blisters, and sometimes chest pain, numbness, or difficulty breathing.
The Academy just announced that there will be ten nominees for Best Picture instead of five. This hasn't happened since circa 1939: the Golden Age of Hollywood. Hopefully this means foreign and independent films will get some more notice.
Here are my choices from last year's race:

I was saddened by the death of Stephen T. Johns at the Holocaust Museum. The American Jewish Committee has set up a Memorial Fund. 100% of the donations goes to Johns's family. You can donate here.
Rebecca Myers & I are thrilled to be unveiling a new issue of Clementine in July. We have been working hard on gathering the best poems and are very excited about it!
Please check out Issue #1 and stay tuned for Issue #2!
Royksopp & Robyn finally release a video for "The Girl & the Robot." I think it's the best single of '09 so far, even if the video clip below is underwhelming.
“They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He’s the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty and totally my type — except that he has a wife. I mean he’s open-minded and liberal, but he’s definitely 100% straight.” -Adam Lambert
Upon the news of GM, I thought this song from The Brave Little Toaster would be appropriate. This could be the saddest song from an animated film ever.
Politico has an interesting article on LGBT groups impatience with the President. I am still an avid supporter and see that there are many great challenges in this time. I hope Obama will help throw out the idiotic and blatantly discriminatory Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. However, I agree with Obama that, for now, marriage should be a state by state issue. I believe the movement is gaining more ground and momentum this way. It's also something difficult for the conservatives to argue against since it isn't nationally implemented. If Obama were to decide today that gay marriage be recognized federally, I worry that it would be easily overturned by a future administration--especially because so much of the population continues to be ignorant about homosexuality and the issue is still so controversial.
Here's a clip from an interview with Brian Williams which aired Wednesday night.
Lots of haterade went around for Best Actress winner Charlotte Gainsbourg's Balenciaga dress but I think she looks trays chic. She's my best dressed in kind of a ho-hum year for Cannes red carpet.
